OK, I'm going crazy...

Is there any way that you can change the formula in pivot table to reflect a COUNTIF situation instead of just COUNT? For example, I have a series of data but only want it displayed in the Pivot Table if a criteria is true. When I try to paste in my original formula, I get a really helpful message box that says 'too few'. Right now, I get the total number of people with anything in that cell which is useless for my report.
