In the next couple weeks, I'm performing a domain upgrade to Windows 2000 from NT 4. Currently, the local DNS is hosted on a somewhat old version of Irix. In order to continue using the current DNS servers, the version of BIND would have to be updated to allow dynamic updates. I've suggested that maybe we just switch to windows DNS entirely, which to my surprise was not shot down by our Unix guys.

I guess what I want to know is does anybody have any reason not to use Windows DNS. We have a network of about 80 Windows PCs, 40 Unix machines, and 10 linux boxes. Marc Creviere

It's actually better than Unix bind as it will allow you secure DNS updates also as long as you make it AD integrated. This also makes for quicker resolution as a client will query AD and not the physical server to get the needed name information. To create a backup server is just as easy as creating another AD integrated zone instead of a secondary. You may not want to use AD as you will need to use a live IP address to be able to host your own DNS. If your not hosting your own site or anything I would reccommend AD and just set up forwarders to your ISP's DNS servers to resolve internet host names.
