I've created an autonumber field in my table and when I enter the records on the form, every now and then the autonumber skips (say from record 10 to 12). I'm sure this is as a result of my incompetence but is there anyway to stop this?

I'm at the end of my tether with this problem...can anyone help??

Many thanks

Once you begin entering info into a record, the autonumber is assigned. Even if you escape out of the record so it is not added to the table, the number has still been assigned. The only thing you can do (I think) is to compact and repair the database, which will only reinstate numbers at the end of the table. If you can not have missing numbers, you are not going to be able to use auto numbering.

Agree with cwillsh. Autonumber is not concerned with holes in the sequence. Seems something keeps track of the last number used, assigns the next autonumber to the next record. I have tables with deleted low number records, and new records numbers just keep incrementing from the last number used.
