I have a win 98 machine that is having trouble playing back microphone recorded sounds. Normal system sounds work fine, the microphone appears to be working fine, but I can't play back what has been recorded. When I open sound recorder and press record, the line moves, so it's getting input, but then when I go to play it back, nothing happens. Like I said, other sounds work fine. Any suggestions? Thanks. Yes, all of the volume sliders are cranked. C:\DOS

Check to make sure that your microphone is not accidentally connected to your sound card's "line input". If it is, you'll have to move it to the mic input.

Also, open the volume control (by double-clicking the tray icon) and select "Properties" from the "Options" menu. Then click the radio button for "Adjust volume for...Recording". Then you can see if the mic input is enabled and if it's volume slider is up.

Definitely check the recording properties in volume control to ensure that you are not muting the mic input. When you record in sound recorder, the green line should fluctuate as you record. If you are getting a flat line as you talk loudly into it, then you are probably not getting input.

I know that it sounds basic, but I have seen this often--Some modems have a jack that is labeled Mic. This is used for modem use only (eg direct phone call using modem). You want to ensure that you are not plugged into this, but into your sound card.

You might try that microphone on another computer to ensure that it works.

Good luck!
