I tried to plug in a mic and did the configuration set up through the control panel and got an error : direct play voice setup error code 0x80004005 windows can not excute Dpvsetup.exe use add remove prgs to install...

I found an error code mesage at Microsofts knowlege base but it's solution did not work for me as my settings were already where they suggested to put them...

Can anyone explain this or suggest a way to fix this???

- When I installed about megs worth of security updates from microsoft my system restarted to make the updates effective after downloading but it restarted to a blue screen with errors - I had to select go back to last known good configuration to get the system to boot - when I did that it looked like I lost my drivers for my modem - reloaded those at it worked fine I thought it might bew the same for the mic but reloading those audio drivers did not work. Its an advance AC97 sound card I think that is known as a software sound card???

HELP ?????????????????????

Something to try would be to use System Restore to go back to a point before you started having troubles. Make sure everything is functioning correctly.

Install your updates one at a time and recheck for any problems. If you find which update is causing problems you can make a decision then.

The M$ driver update for the AC97 sound is defective. Twice in the last 2 years M$ came out a new driver, and it killed my sound both times. Just get out your original mother board CD and reinstall the original drivers. This is why I have "Windows Update" set to only notify so I can see whay is going into my system!

You were nearly there with this fix from Microsoft!

"In Control Panel, double-click Sounds and Audio Devices.
On the Voice tab, under Voice Playback, click Advanced.
On the Performance tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider at least one position to the right."

Try this additional step.

If it is already as far right as it will go. Move it to any other position and press Apply. Then move it back to far right and press Apply and OK.

Tried that and it still will not work - I can record my voice and barly hear it in the background -- all setting are at full vol as far as I can tell- gonna try a new mic but this one worked at the office????

Try a new mike and see how it goes. You can also test any mike out in Windows Messenger, as an alternative tester, if you have it, under tools.

Perhaps running SFC /Scannow from the Start Run box will help.

I know you haven't got the mike set to mute, or Not Selected in Sndvol32.exe/ Master Volume/ Options/ Properties/ Recording/ Microphone, so I wont suggest you check there.

Good luck.

You will not insult me if you wanted to take the time to tell me every step involved to config the mic for xp pro - I think I've done them alol but it can not hurt to check...

And thanks alot for taking time to help me out this mic probelm is really getting under my skin...

I will purchase a new mic soon - I am runnine the driver that came with the mother board disk as well...so we'll see if a new mic does it as this one is a few years old now..(4 years at least)...

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Hello Monty

I had the same problem with my onboard ac97 sound card. When I checked my computer had installed Windows xp hotfix SP1 and SP2. When I uninstalled these hotfixes my microphone started working again.

The only hotfix I have installed is KB823980 to stop the W32 Blaster Worm virus.

My mic works really well.

Ass linney says either install the updates one at a time or as I do do not install them at all.
