Microphone causes XP to Hang

I have had two instances lately of XP failing after a microphone was installed. The micorphone worked fine but XP hung which is really rare and the XP splash screen even changed. Removing the microphone made the problem go away.

Any clues.

Some audio card software can re-assign the ports. The mic port may now be an auxillary input, or even a MIDI port. Is this mic input on the card in back? Do you have mic inputs on the front of the case? This front connector may be defective, or wired wrong. Normally, the mic socket is "shorted" inside the socket, this is opened and contacts the microphone plug when it is plugged in.
