Can anyone explain to me how the TS licensing comes in to play with MF XP. We have a 15 user license for Metaframe, what kind of licensing do we need to have for TS? Do we really need activated licenses or will temporary work? I was told to use windows 2000 instead of 2003 to save money on TS licensing, but know i am getting messages that my temporary license will expire in 15 days. Currently there are 91 temporary licenses (it looks like one for every machine that was used to access the server). Not sure really where to go from here.

Windows XP Pro, and 2000 Pro have a built in TS Cal. The following onformation should help.

Taken from:
Q. If I'm using Citrix MetaFrame, why do I need to buy a TS CAL?

A. Citrix licenses the use of their Independent Computing Architecture (ICA) access protocol. Microsoft licenses use of the Windows terminal server. If you use MetaFrame on a Windows terminal server you need to license Windows terminal server and access via ICA.

If 2000 and XP Pro have built in CALs, what and how many is needed to be purchased?

looks like 91 to me. How many Citrix users have you got, not licenses as I can see you have 15. Count them up. Count up the number of users who have 2K or XP and subtract that from total. That will be the minimum you will need.

Most users have 2000 or XP yet they are still receiving this error "your temporary license will expire in 15 days, please contact you systems administrator for a permanent license". What does activating the terminal services licensing server do when you currently dont have any licenses purchased? So I would say that all but about 5 users might use something other than 2000 or XP, how much are these licenses?

Aha you must activate a Terminal Services Licensing Server. In AD this means it must be on a DC in NT4 on any Win2K server. You install TS Licensing server and then activate it through the MS Clearing house, even if you don't have any licenses.
