I can't remember where I found this but it works.
How to get rid of the spam popups labeled “Messenger Service”. Most people seem to think this has something to do with MSN Messenger, which is totally incorrect. These ads are being sent through an open port that Windows XP uses for sending IM's over a network. WinXP has a useless feature from NT, called NetSend, that allows you to send messages to other NT users from the command line. It seems like a cool idea at first, but it's a lame IM feature and it makes XP vulnerable to spam through the port that this service opens. All you need to use this service is a target IP, so the spammers have begun spamming entire IP ranges, thus, anyone in that IP range with the Messenger Service enabled receive these stupid popup spam messages. So, if you are having these messages popup on you and you would like to get rid of them, just follow these simple steps:
Go to Start and Select Run
In the Run dialog type “services.msc”(without the quotes)
Open Messenger (just double click on it)
Click Stop button
Change "Startup Type" to DISABLED
Click OK to close everything
Enjoy your popup free computing.
Please let me know if the advice we give is of some help.
