why has messenger suddendly started saying Error 80048823 and that either my account doesnt exist or my password is wrong??

password has never changed, account has been active for years with no problems.....

any ideas what i could do to get back into it??

what happens if your secret question answer has changed / forgotten? all i get now is something like "entered too many times try again later"

 
Try the password reset instructions that are provided via the Sign-in page. Click the 'Help' link on the left hand side of the Sign-in page and click the link 'How can I reset my password?', follow the instructions for the password reset e-mail. If worse comes to worse call tech support to change the password.

There is a "Manage Passwords" section obtained via typing Control Userpasswords2 in the Start Run box. In the resulting window you will get to it via the Advanced tab.

See if there is anything mentioned in "Manage Passwords" concerning your Messenger Account Password. If there is you can Edit your Password and therefor make sure the Password is correct via re-entering it.
