Messed-up File Assoc. 1

Hello All:
In a fit of rampant stupidity, I managed to tell windows to open any shortcut with winDVD. Now I can't open any shortcuts, I click on them, winDVD opens up. How do I reset all file associations to thier default settings? Thank you, Brad.

First I would like to know how come you get _all_ filetype associated to windvd---what is it? It seems a very unreasonable option offered by the windvd.

Second search shell.inf with the search utility. The worst case would be re-install shell.inf because "default" associations are there. But, I would say due to the general impact, a second opinion is necessary. (Also, registry restore is another option.)

I was going to watch a DVD on puter, it didn't autostart so I used the Open With.. command and then told (checkbox) windows to open all files of this type with this program( windvd). Of course I had rt-clicked on the icon for that drive, not the actuall file on the dvd so windows associated all .ico files with windvd, OOPS. Thank you for your response. I figured it out myself, just had to think about it. I searched for .LNK in the registry, deleted it and did a reboot and that fixed it. Thanks again for your answer, Brad.

Just wanted to say a word of thanks to bcastner for posting this fine link (even though though this thread is several months old). I've been wrestling w/the problem of resetting the .lnk registry settings for a couple of weeks now ever since I inadvertently associated it w/another file type while performing a link on some legacy software. Kudos!
