Hi I am having a problem were messages with attachments stay in the "OUTBOX".

We are using Exchange 5.5 SP3 on a Win2000 server. It is a Dell 2GIG server with 2GIG of RAM also. The client PC's are using Outlook 2000 and the OS is Win2000.

Problem: We are having a problem were messages that contain attachments and are sent to an external address are not being sent. They just remain in the "OUTBOX" of Outlook. We can send email with attachments internally without any problems but as soon as we try and send email to an external address the message just remains in the "OUTBOX". Messages without attachments send just fine both internally and externally. Also there is one other thing that I would like to point out. If I open the message that I am trying to send in the "OUTBOX" and hit send while the message resides in the "OUTBOX" it sends. This is baffling. This is happening with ALL MAILBOXES old and new.

I am not too sure why this is happening. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks...SOKO

Still having the same problem. I need some help with this one guys...

Thanks,
SOKO

was this working at one time? do you see any events on the exchange server relating to the MTA or IMC?

Yes this was working fine until about a week ago. No events in the event viewer. There must be a reason why this would just start to happen. I have read other posts with similar problems but no one has an answer as to why. One post even mentioned a reinstall of exchange to fix the problem only to have it happen again a couple of days later. So I am still searching for the solution. It is definitely on the server side since it affects all clients.

Soko,

If you open up your Internet Mail Service Properties in exchange (from the connections tab in Exchange administrator), under the "Internet Mail" tab, what is checked for "Attachments Outboun"?

Hi in the "Attachments Outbound" I have MIME plain text checked. I would like to thank you guys for your help but I have finally figured it out.

In Norton Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange I changed the "Mode" setting from "MAPI/VAPI combination" to "MAPI Only". I don't know why when set on "MAPI/VAPI combination" that it would hold attachments in the "OUTBOX" because it has worked for months, but changing it to "MAPI Only" uses the Norton Anti-Virus scan engine instead of the engine built into Norton Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange.

MAPI/VAPI combination - Provides complete virus protection using the latest anti-virus technology (VAPI) with additional logging and reporting capability.

VAPI Only - Provides complete virus protection using the latest anti-virus technology, with limited logging and reporting.

MAPI Only - Provides virus protection using existing anti-virus technology, with full featured logging and reporting capability.

I am happy that Exchange is now working fine WITHOUT holding messages in the “OUTBOX. Thanks for all your suggestions.
