I have an empty distribution list that "receives" many e-mails (this is because it has several SMTP addresses attached to it). However, the DL has no members. So incoming messages are accepted by the DL, but the messages don't actually forward anywhere. I was wondering if this increases the transaction log file sizes and information store, or is the message just completely deleted?

TIA

Have you actually checked the database size after sending a large message to the list?
On our unix servers we usually setup empty lists with the name of a user who has left the company so that the messages addressed to that name go to /dev/null instead of the postmaster account.
I would expect exchange to be the same.
