We are using a Nortel 81c and Avaya MM and have a message waiting lamp issue where the commands are issued properly by the Avaya MM server to the Nortel system, but in consistent results occur to light the message waiting lamp on a 3904 telephone handset. Sometimes the waiting lamp lights appropriately other (or shuts off) and other times it does not.

Can anyone describe how the 81c processes message waiting commands?

If you are using an Avaya (Octel) the digital set built with MCK (message cancel) and MIK (message indicator on) keys should be dedicated to this function and not handle any incoming calls. To lite the lite it would press the MIK key then enter the Extension number then press the MIK key again. To turn the lite off do the same using the MCK key. Make sure the keys are layed out correctly on all sets.

Thanks for your response. The message keys are set-up properly and they seem to work manually just fine. The Avaya UM system seems to issue the appropriate commands which are received just fine most of the time, but every now and then the commands do not seem to have any effect specifically in turning the message indicator off.

may be just one set that can't control the lamps, check the cls marks very close...maybe off hours disable all but one set and test it, turning off and on the lamp, if that single station works a few times, disable it, and test the next one... i've seen the problem with just the one set

Thanks again for responding. The issues is random and happens to multiple users across a test group of 20 phones. The major symptom seems to be turning the message lamp off after a single message is listened (lamp goes out as it should) to then marked as new (lamp goes back on as it should), then listened to again (lamp never goes off). Almost seems like some sort of timing issue.

In all cases if another message comes in and is listened to the lamp will then go off. Sometimes if you wait a while and mark the orginal message as new and listen to it the lamp will then go off, but this is not consistent.

Any more thoughts?

I really appreciate all your help!

In all my years with working on the opt's this has always been an issue. the lamp will sometimes not turn off. the only work arounds that i know of are to 1 send yourself a message then listen to it, this usualy works believe it or not, the other is to put an mck key on a set and manualy turn off the lamp.

yes, sending yourself a message and listening to it does work to turn off the lamp. You say this is a known issue? Something that is common? Do folks just live with it? What causes it?

Not sure where the trouble is. Everyone I know that works on Nortel has expierenced the trouble. Nortel says because it isn't Nortel the feature works when manualy it works.
