Message looping between sites

I have a weird situation that pops up every now and them. We have 3 exchange servers in different AD sites. The central site handles all smtp to and from the internet. So, basically, any outbound messages from the remote sites are forwarded to the main site and then delivered to the internet using MX records. On occasion, I have an outbound message from a user at the main site that, for some reason, gets routed to one of the remote sites. Remote site doesn't know what to do with it since it's destined for the internet, so it sends it back to the main site, and the message sits there and loops until finally an NDR is generated.

What's really weird is it doesn't happen all the time, all of a sudden in the middle of an email conversation, one message will start looping. Does anyone have any idea what would cause this and what I should check? I've went over all of my send/receive connectors, and, as far as I can tell, everything is OK. Also, it seems this only occurs with one of the two remote sites - and the configuration of that site is identical to the other one. Here's one of the NDA's that's being generated:

jfbc.org is the local domain and sbcwr.org is a remote one. I've also seen this happen with AOL addresses. jfbc-ecc-exch01 is the server at the main site and jfbc-cdr-exch01 is a remote site. I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Fraid the NRD doesn't help much! :)

First thing I would look at would be event viewers on both servers. Also worth trying out the built-in troubleshooting tools regarding mail flow and general exchange health.

Let me know if you can see anything in there.

Cheers,

Steve.
