We have an Exchange 2000 server and clients are using Outlook 2002. All users are accessing mail from the Inbox under their personal folders. Everything works fine, but does this mean that all mail activity is not being saved on Exchange server. There is a Mailbox-"jane Doe" within Outlook folders but not being used.

What is the best practice??????

as long as you have the disk space (and you really should), keep the Inbox on the server, not in PST. Especially if those PST's are on workstations that are not being backed up.

Disk space is the critical issue, as well as the version of Exchange you have. The standard version will only support up to 16GB total (for all users mail, as well as overhead).

An option you could go with is to use the PST files, but store them on the server and backup the server. The users here have a home directory and we store their PST file in their home folder so it's secure and backed up.
