Hello All,

I know it can be done, but when to do it and when to start over from scratch. I have 6 Netware 6.0 servers and 1 that I am going to make into a groupwise 6.5 server with Netware 6.0 on it.

First can I merge them all under one server and have them in thier own contexts from the trees they were?? Or is there something cryptic that I would have to do to pull them all under one tree???

Or would it be best to start with the top and go down from there doing one server at a time.

Thanks for any help.

When you merge trees, you don't have much choice of where the servers end up. You essentially get one tree with two top level containers (or more depending on how many O's you had), one for the old tree, then one for the new.

Once you've merged, you can then move stuff around, to a certain degree (with the right planning and partitioning). But I am confused as to exactly what you have and what you are trying to do.

Depending on what you're trying to do, sometimes you can take your largest tree and leave it in tact. Then pull servers out of your old tree one by one and insert them into the new tree. But you'll have to recreate all the NDS objects, trustee assignments, etc that are applicable for the server. Might be painful, but also could be just the thing you need to start with a fresh clean setup.

Another thing you can do with 6.5 (maybe even 6, i believe it's an eDir 8.7.x feature).. is graft a single server tree into an existing tree.

Hello Marvin,

So if I understand correctly, I cannot then create a new organizational units and pull the appropriate server into it? If that is the case bummer. :o(

I have had a 6.5 server installed and seen how you can merge trees and all the new things you can do, but we are going to stay with 6 at least for another year.

So you think maybe redoing the servers and starting from scratch would be good?

I just wish there was a way to merge them all together under their organizational units.

Thanks for the info Marvin

you can then move the ou's around after the merge

you just need to organise the partitioning - when you merge the trees - on the tree that we will call the sacrificial lamb then you would merge all partitions on that tree so that it's just one biggy - and hopefully reduce it to three copies and hopefully no wan links

then you merge - end up with 2 o's

then with the use of partitioning you can move them around

try it in your test servers - see if you can move an ou - should say something like sod off do it from here - then follow instructions

for the merge schema and time is critical - they must be identical

good luck - let us know how it goes

No Idahotech, you cannont create OU's and just pull the new tree under it. (If you were grafting a SINGLE SERVER Tree into it, then you can). But you can merge the trees and then move stuff around after the fact. Not any different than moving stuff around in a regular tree.. But like Terry says, do it in a test tree first so you understand what happens and how, and what problems you have. For example, moving an OU requires that it is a partition. If you just start haphazardly moving stuff around in your recently merged tree, you could end up with a pretty serious problems.

OK thanks all. I will see what I can do with some test servers. It sounds like though I may want to consider rebuilding the tree for the school district and then redo each server and make it apart of that tree and start fresh.

My boss believes that we can just merge them and it will be done. I will have to print this out and show him it is not a walk in the park. Thanks for your help and I will let you know what we decide and what happens when I test it.

Thanks again :o)

it's not that it's a complicated task

it's just if it goes wrong then it's a big wrong
