Merge Replication Error

I was trying to setup a merge replication in SQL Server 7.0. Everything ran OK until it tried to create an initial snapshot and then it failed. The error message was
xp_execresultset: unable to get a bound connection back to the server. The error only happens when I try to start merge replication, but not when I start transactional/snapshot replication.

If anybody knows what might have caused this and how to fix it, please advice.
