Merge Replicaiton

I have a question about how merge replication works.

How is the data updated? For example, if you have table A that you are replicating to table B and data has been deleted from A, does it also delete the data on B? Does it reference a primary key to update the data? I can't find adequate information in any books I have, but I'm sure someone here has used merge replication before.
