Mer Mail Hiccups

I'm still relatively new to this stuff but have learned enough to survive.

Recently the Mer mail started going down about once per week. When I enter the AX command it looks like Mer mail is going through a software reboot. All sorts of codes and text scrolls down the page. I then have to use the diagnostic to check the ports. The ports appear to be out of service. I run the diagnostics and things seem to return to normal. I re-enable the ports and things are back to normal. About a week later it hiccups again.

At first I thought it was an occasional UPS problem but I'm not so sure any more. Any ideas?

I'll take it that this is an option 11 with a card option mermail in slot 10. The mermail itself resides on 3 cards. The main card with the power supply may be bad or it just may need to be reseated. Terminals get dirty and such. Also when you see it going through a reboot it may look like a hard rebot but it's not.

Personally, I would shut down the AML link in ld 48.
Shut down and actually pull out the mermail to TOTALLY remove power from it. Let it sit out for about 30 seconds. Then reseat it and bring it back up. See if that solves your problem.

i would agree that your seeing a hardware problem.. i do not power one down without spare cards in the switchroom.. reseating may work, and then it may never come back up.. it's not the ups if just the mail dies.. common power to the opt 11.. codes on the main screen may help PRIOR to the system dying

Did the MM stop working and you where trying to find out if it was not working and thats why you logi to MM? What was it doing/not doing that made you think it was down.

Are you sure the MM wasn't just doing a scheduled report and that is what was scrolling down the screen?

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Sorry about the delay in responding. I wanted to aawait another hiccup so I could give more detail information. Sure enough, I left for two weeks and it happened while I was gone. I had to talk someone through the process over the phone while away. The problem reoccured yesterday before I returned. My backup person was "too busy" to help. (So much for having a backup person). Today, I got back and the problem was still there. It doesn't seem to have any predictable frequency.

I tend to think that's not the problem. The auto attendent doesn't respond until I reset everything. Each and every time I have this problem (in excess of 10 times) the same symtoms. As soon as I hit "AX", the screen starts scrolling with information. The probability that it's auditing each time I log in seems remote. As the messagees flash by the screen, I see things about "load".

Two - 4 port cards. I'll disable the ports, then disable the card. I then use the diagnostic feature and it reports the card as "okay". I then re-enable things and all comes back properly. Today when it happened, both cards were goofed up so I ran the diagnostice on both cards.

The probability that two cards are bad at the same time has me think that it's not port card related.

Capturing the SEER is difficult since someone stole the printer. I guess I need to add a laptop to the printer port and capture the output that way.

that will help.. seers are good.. who would want that printer? sounds like a bad mmp card... not usually the ups or power supply.. that would normally take the 11 down as well...
