I need help here as I'm quickly realising the limitations of my PC Hardware knowledge.

I have a Gateway G6-400C bought several years ago in the UK, but not sure what motherboard I have (Q1. How can I found this out?)
...I can find lots out about the G6-400 but not about the G6-400C

I do know this much:
BIOS is 4R4CB0XA.15A.0014.P04
Processor Speed: 400MHz (Intel Celeron)
Frontside Bus Speed 128kb
Chipset 82440BX PIIX4E
Total (current) Memory 64MB (it's PC100)
"Upgradeable to 256MB" according to the documents it came with

I spent the majority of last night getting into a fix trying to upgrade my RAM with 2x128MB 168DIMM PC133 NP CL3

Now the Crucial website says that for a Gateway G6-400 I can use this type of RAM (note the lack of G6-400C)

Currently, if I pluck out the old 64MB and plug in the 2 new 128MBs nothing much happens (green power light comes on & that's about it)

Q2. Can someone help me upgrade my RAM? (if you need anymore info. on my setup I can get back to you!)

I'm also hoping that the answer's not going to contain the phrases: "Celeron, motherboard, only PC100 RAM"

Cheers Guys & Gals

Ian

Phrase "celeron doesn't come into it" although they have a fsb of 66, manufactures generally used PC100 in there system builds as it was backward compatible so just "detuned" to run at the processors 66fsb speed.
Now in theory PC133 is the same and should also work in an older system, the reality is though this is rarely the case, higher density modules are normally the cause but I have seen double sided 128mb modules that don't work as well so??
Unfortunately my answer is going to be the one you didn't want to hear, try replacing the PC133 with PC100 and I bet it'll work. Martin
Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

having upgraded gateway machines before, they tend to use motheboards which have the ID stamped on the board in a white ink-layer(eg GA-7VM) -

companies such as memoryx.net are listing memory upgrades for your machine in pc100 format only.

if you follow this link: it lists various gateway memories, with only the pc66 and pc100 shown as compatible with your machine :(

This might be my ignorance showing but a FSB of 128 without occing is unusual. Given the age of your system a FSB of 100 is more resonable unless you have chosen to overclock which might be the root cause of your problem.
