A FRIEND HAS JUST UPGRADED MY PC USING AN ASUS A7N8X STANDARD M/B, ATHLON XP 2200+ AND 2 X 256MB PC2100 BUFFALO TECH. DIMMS. PROBLEM IS, HE CAN ONLY GET 1 OF THE DIMMS TO WORK AT ANY ONE TIME, AND ONLY THEN IN SLOT 3. BOTH DIMMS WORK FINE WHEN EACH ARE TRIED IN SLOT 3 BUT WHEN ANY OTHER COMBINATION IS TRIED THE PC WON'T BOOT AT ALL. SO AT THE MOMENT I CAN ONLY USE 1 X 256MB OF MEMORY. NOT SURE IF IT'S A M/BOARD FAULT OR IF HE'S DONE SOMETHING WRONG. I'VE EMAILED ASUS TWICE BUT HAVEN'T HEARD BACK. ANYBODY GOT ANY IDEAS???

I'm a little unsure of this one, it could be bad sockets on the motherboard but Asus is one of the better motherboard builders so that is not my first guess. My first hunch is that the memory is not compatible with the motherboard. I've seen this more and more lately myself. It may be good enough to work one at a time and boot, but I have seen mobo's that do that and then crash windows like no one's business. If you look on Asus' website you see various manufacturers and the exact part numbers of memory that has been approved to work on that board. I would try another brand of memory. Crucial is a great name brand in memory. And I have had good luck with Kingston too, even though they are a cheaper priced product.
Good Luck!

This is one of the many problems we encounted with the first release of the A7N8X Deluxe, I believe Tbarney has it right, these boards are extremely picky with memory.
Latest Bios and unified Nvidia drivers also cure many ills. Martin

THANK YOU BOTH FOR YOUR HELP. MY FRIEND BUILDS A LOT OF PC'S ALTHOUGH THIS IS HIS FIRST NFORCE EFFORT. I'LL SEE IF HE CAN SWAP THE MEMORY FOR A DIFFERENT TYPE AND IF THAT FAILS I'LL TRY UPDATING THE DRIVERS. CHEERS!
