I have an old server with an intel PR440FX motherboard. Currently it has 256MB RAM (1 x 128MB and 2 x 64MB). I wanted to up it to 512MB so purchased 3 more 128MB DIMMS. However, when you put them in they only register at 64MB. We had more DIMMS sent out of a different make but same type (I have checked on crucial.com website and they are correct) but they also register at 64MB. The original 128MB DIMM works fine.

Does anyone have any ideas about what could be wrong. I have updated the BIOS with the latest download from the Intel website.

Many Thanks

I think you will find that there is a 256Mb or 384Mb limit upon that board - FX chipset is responsible not the Bios.
am about 90% sure about this, correct me if anyone knows better.

Thanx for the reply.

Checked on the intel web site and it says that DIMM memory combinations for the PR440FX motherboard can include 512MB at 4 x 128MB. Problem is that we can't get any of the DIMMS to register above 64MB even on their own.

The DIMMS are not Samsung but they are 16M x 72. That's where we got the info from for the purchase.

Checked on Crucial.com and used memory selector and compared serial number with number on first DIMMS that were purchased.

website number was CT16M72E4B6
number on DIMMS was CT16M72E8B6

That was the only difference.

Looking at those part numbers - The original is a single banked module (8) and the new memory is double bank (4);

So it must be the mobo only supports the single bank and reports the double banked memory at half value.

Regards. Running a PC without backups is like driving a car without a seatbealt. Your knack'ed when you crash!
