I have a PC with an MSI MS-6340 Micro-ATX motherboard, AMD Duron 1200 processor with 512MB RAM comprising 2 x 256MB SDRAM DIMM modules.
Having noticed a significant drop in speed of my PC I checked the system hardware status under Control Panel and saw that only 256Mb RAM was shown.
Thinking that one of the modules was faulty I removed both and replaced them with a single 512Mb PC133 SDRAM DIMM. This was fitted in the first DIMM slot but System and start up still only showed 256MB. I tried it in the second slot and still only 256Mb.
Is this a Motherboard problem?

Well before replacing them with a 512MB stick, I would have tried each one of the 256MB sticks one at a time to see if they were recognized. If they are individually, but just not when they are together, a slot on the motherboard may have gone bad.

It is possible that one of your sticks are bad and that the 512MB replacement is not fully compatible with your motherboard (too dense perhaps).
