Just to confirm what i believe to be correct, can someone look at the below and tell me how much memory is available to a process on this system if i start one? If you can explain why that might be helpful too..

Incorrect, the kernel has been caching your drive contents into memory as well (see Cached). This value is 500+MB

The kernel reduces the amount of mem cache when you fire up applications, but it will rarely purge the entire cache - particularly on a file-active box.

Therefore, the answer is..... it depends. However, you have SIGNIFICANTLY MORE than 27MB of RAM available for running an app. My guess is that the kernel would surrender 100-200MB of RAM if things balanced well.

This is always like asking "which retirement plan is best for me".... it depends on MANY factors and you'll never really get a precise answer.
