media reads offline with a backup folder

I am running backup-exec 9.0 on w2k. I am backing up to a USB 2.0 hd and have set up the necessary backup folder. I have also tried setting up a backup folder on a mapped network drive. When I do a test run, I get a failure at the media check, always reading 0.00 mb capacity. Any idea what might be going on? A step I might have missed?
