I am at my wits end I have tried everything and am still getting this same error on my backups:
Media mount failed.
User canceled a Physical Volume Library operation.

The media operation was terminated by the user.
Error reading file data.

CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY I AM GETTING THIS ERROR? AND HOW TO CORRECT IT??????
Thank you.

Couple things. You or the job is cancelling becuase it prompting you to insert media. Take a look at your alerts tab.

Either your tape is getting full and prompting for more media or there is some overwrite protection problems

Right click on the job and select Job History (or it might be Job Log). Check out the job log and see if it gives any other information. Also, check the Windows Event Viewer Logs for any related error messages.

Some things to consider:

Who else has access to Backup Exec?
Is the server being shut down for any reason?
Is this a tape library? If it's a library, how many tape drives are in the library? How many other jobs are in progress at the same time? (It could be that there is already a tape in the drive at the time this backup tries to start(.

I am using external hard drives, no one else has access I reformatted both external hard drives yesterday and today the same message
I have all the alerts turned off as those used to cause an issue.
I can send anyone the logs if you want to look at them.

My back ups used to be perfect and all the sudden this is happening.

It appears that BE lost it's connection to the external hard drives.

Have you rebooted the backup server since this error started? If not, I would shutdown the backup server, turn off the external hard drives, turn on the external hard drives, and then start up the backup server. Then see if the backup server can even 'see' the hard drives. Go to My Computer and see if they show up. If they show up, try a backup and see what happens.

Also, check for loose cables.

I have restarted the server, I can always see the ex. drive
The backup jobs are showing in gigabytes to be complete, our backups are always between 70 and 78 gigs and even amongst the errors I am still seeing a byte count of 79,706,434,465 but I am still getting the error that it is cancelled.
This is the summery

Original start time: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 11:36:42 AM
Job started: Wednesday, April 06, 2005 11:00:04 PM
Job ended: Thursday, April 07, 2005 3:17:17 AM
Elapsed time: 04:17:13
Files : 248,603
Directories: 15,729
Skipped files: 16
Corrupt files: 0
Files in use: 0
Byte count: 79,706,434,465 bytes
Rate: 446.00 MB/Min

What size external drive are you using?

I'm wondering if the drive is getting full (as far as Backup Exec is concerned) and it's looking for somewhere else to continue the backup.

Ok I feel like a complete idiot; but if I don't post this someone else might not benefit from my stupidity!
They are 80 gig hard drives and they are needing more space and that is why they are cancelling. So I purchased 2 300 gig external drives and while waiting for them to arrive I did a few test backups of just a few megs and they completed fine.
So there it is.
I always make things harder than they have to be :)

Don't feel bad....take a search through the posts in this forum and you'll find lots of individuals who forget about tape/disk size.

I am getting the same erro on a customers tape backup. Every moning when she comes in the tape is ejected and she has the same error :
the Media mount failed.
User canceled a Physical Volume Library operation.

The media operation was terminated by the user.
Error reading file data.

However, she is backing up to a tape drive. It looks like it is close to being finished with almost 50 gig when this occurs. I do know that her server is low on disk space about 500 mgs. Can anyone point me in the right direction since her last successful backup was on 8/29/05...Thanks.

Sound like the tape is running out of space. Make sure the job is not set to automatically cancel. Then it should prompt for media in the alert tab. Put another tape in and see if it finishes.

Remember that bad spots on the tape cause it to fill up faster than it ordinarily would.

I checked the job, it is not set for automatic cancel. When looking at the summary, you can see that most of it went onto the tape but with the same error. If it needed another tape would it prompt for it? I am new at this so bare with me. Also, they have like a small test run backup and when I tried to run it I get message that the tape in not overwriteable....I am so lost
