Ok. This is a challenge. I will pay somebody money if they can solve this one. Is it possible to calculate the distance between two computers, and if so where do you start? The two computers are on the same network, but located at different addresses in Chicago. They sometimes move around at their respective sites, but administration wants to know the exact location or distance the users are from a central router. It is a 10/100 LAN and no wireless equipment or GPS systems can be afforded.

Seriously, if someone can break this one, or give a spectacular lead, I will reward.

G :)

Do they want to physical distace like if you were walking? A network cable run might be longer or shorter. If you have someone that has a higher end cable scanner that does TDR that will tell you. Also you could just look at the feet markers on the cable running from the server room to the user.

I have a customer who contacted Fluke and they got a free trial of a Fluke Network Analyzer. Had to give it back in a week, but it gathered some nice info in that time frame. You might try that route or just try renting one.
