I have been using Windows 98 since I got my (Dell PII 450) computer in 98. Subsequently I have upgraded the hardware - new mobo and PIII 800 chip plus memory etc. Also added various Microsoft upgrades to the OS. In recent weeks -maybe a couple of months the system started to get a bit flakey, USB sometimes wouldn't work, my Modem ceased to be recognized - occasional crashes and blue screen of death.
I figured that the problem lay with corruption in the OS or maybe BIOS settings - as I am prone to tweaking the BIOS viz switching on P&P, increasing AGP apature, Hard Drive S.M.A.R.T. settings - on balance though I felt it was the OS.
Rather than reinstall a 3 yr old Win 98, I thought I may as well install the ME upgrade. However my fears seem confirmed, because when ME tried to back up the System files the machine froze, and install failed to proceed. Also in the connection I ran the Microsoft "SFC" system file config utility which also froze.
Now I have to decide whether to install the ME without backing up current settings.
Any thoughts/help, will be gratefully received.
