I have a PC running ME and a Laptop running W98 1st edition.
I have run the ME home networking wizard on the PC w/ME. I have made the home networking disk for the Laptop running W98 1st edition. However, when I run the home networking setup disk the wizard says I need an Ethernet card.

This is the problem; I have one. A Linksys 10/100 PCMCIA card. It shows up in the device manager and in network properties. I have also setup the laptop as a client on a NT 4.0 network with no problem.

I don’t need to share an internet connection just files and a printer. What’s up w/ME not

I never used the wizard,

Normal protocols that are already established when you install the NIC.

There are a few things with any peer to peer.

First Identification tab on network setup. Group needs to be named the same between the two.

Second, file and print sharing is enabled.

Third - NetBEUI protocal installed

Fourth - goto my computer, right click the harddrive you want to share - and select sharing - configure from there.

Needs to be done on any computer doing the networking

YES schase
All of the items you have mentioned below have been done (Thanks)

Wow,

Kind of lost then, have you tried deleting the adapter, rebooting and reinstalling it?

YES have deleted/uninstalled and reinstalled nic.

I have setup This laptop/w that nic on my nt network with no problem.

wow, man I'm out of ideas.

I'm sorry I could not help DCL

If, as schase pointed out, you have the necessary items setup under network configuration on the 98 laptop, you should be able to connect to the ME machine. I have setup plenty of Microsoft shares for all different types of clients. I have setup shares between ME and 98 machines with and witout the client disks...

Start by checking both sides -> CONTROL PANEL -> NETWORK
Again, as schase said, look to make sure you have the Client for MS networks, an adapter, the same protocol on both machines (Netbeui or IP or both), and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks Service. Again, be sure to verify these things are installed on BOTH machines.

Next, check your identification tab and double check that the Computer Name is different for each machine and that the Workgroup name is IDENTICAL for both machines. It IS case sensitive. I've also seen people accidentally put a space after the name on one side and not on the other... spaces count and that isn't the same so the clients wouldn't see each other.

With these things double checked, on the computer whose files and printer you want to share, right click on the drive and/or printer icon and select "Sharing" *Note, if the File and Printer sharing service is not installed, you won't see this option* Make sure sharing is turned on. (You'll also see the little blue-sleeved hand under the device)

From here... On the machine you want to be able to share the devices, go to the desktop and click on Network Neighborhood. It should open up and you should be able to see the other machine listed there by it's computer name. Clicking on that should reveal the shared resources... If the Network Neighborhood is empty, or if you get an error message about "Not being able to browse the network" then something is wrong with the settings in your control panel... Go back and double check them, or uninstall and reinstall them manually on both sides.

Are you using TCP/IP or just NetBeui? If you are using IP and can't see the machines under Network Neighborhood, can you ping the opposite machines from the DOS prompt?

Sorry, schase... this is pretty much everything you were suggesting... maybe just a little more detailed... I was just hoping to maybe get a littel more information as to what has been checked and the nature of the problem as DCL is seeing it... Maybe I can suggest some additonal ideas.

No problem, it's an odd one. Especially where it isn't "accepting" the nic card, it's there, but not working. But did on NT

..... did you check device manager to see if there are any conflicts with the NIC DCL?
