I posted a thread a while ago about this, and got some useful info.
But I am still having probs.

win2k network (thru linksys adsl) of 2 desktops & 2 laptops, all static IP addresses. all share files ok, all "see" the others on My network places/ double click "Computers near me" four pcs visible, files accessed ok.

Problem... Add new build pc, "Fido" the hound from hell,
carry out the navigation above (from Cedric, an existing pc on the NW)- my network etc, click on the Fido (computers near me) icon. The message \\Fido not accessible the network path not found is displayed.

From Fido
Try another route - "My network places", double click "Computers near me", message "Develop ( the name I gave the workgroup) is not accessible, The list of servers for this workgroup is not available"

Do a Start / RUN \\Cedric from Fido, msg - the network path was not found.
I can Ping from Fido the new pc to any other IP addr on the network. I can even tracert getting the "name" of the other pcs from Fido. But I cannot get Fido to display as an icon any pc on the network. And I cannot ping Fido from anywhere else. Can any one help ?

I have Firewall enabled on the linksys router, but there seem to be no error messages in the log saying Fido is atthe door entry refused.

I am missing something simple, but have looked at it so long I cannot see it!

Thanks in advance.

Sorry bcastner you have been very helpful, But I am so dim.

I tried the link you posted, it came with a great deal of useful tests to carry out. including a download of browstat.exe, which did give me some funny results, (that meant nothing)

Is it worth turning off the firewall that comes with the adsl router (linksys)?
The reports produced by this router do not mention being attacked by Fido (the pc I'm trying to add to the network)

When I double click on "computers near me" I get the error message " the list of servers for this workgroup is not available", when I try to add a network place the browse option does not find anything.

I am at the end of my tether because I know it is something daft! And I have tried so many different things I don't know what I have tried/not tried!

To recap Fido can ping/tracert to cedric/dora (other N/Worked pc's)
also fido can ping 127.0.0.1, and though Fido cannot see any file shares on anything.
but no one can do the reverse to Fido (little sh*t!)
Thanks again.
If I get no joy from this I will steal a network administrator from the nearest multinational I can find.

The Linksys firewall is an SPI firewall examining WAN side traffic, and is not in play for this problem.

. All workgroups have the same name (under 15 characters, no spaces or special characters). Check Fido.

. No blank or empty passwords for any user;

. Logged on user on Fido made a new user with password on all other computers. In other words, the usernames and passwwords of all users should be identical lists on Fido, Cedric, etc.

. Something: drive, folder, printer but something shared on each and every computer, even if never used.

. Netbios over TCP/IP enabled on every computer.
Windows XP Pro -- Simple File Sharing enabled

Windows XP Pro -- Simple File Sharing Disabled

For an all Win2k network, the second link " Simple File Sharing Disabled" applies.

Check that there isn't a local firewall running on Fido.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!
