I have created a database with five tables and all have primary keys with referential integrity enforced in the relationships. I created a form that is based on a query of multiple tables. I created an .mde file and linked all the tables with the "get external data" tool and with the linked table manager. When data is entered in the form using the .mde no data appears in the linked tables. What have I done wrong?

Hi wmdavies, this has happened to me before and the reason was that i'd created my db project as a single item, then created my mde without splitting my database files away, then i'd split my db files from my original and linked them to my mde. therefore i had 2 datasources in my mde. 2 all intense purposes everything works fine cos the data is being enetered onto the forms and is being passed to the local tables instead of the split ones so there where no error messages to warn me of my error.

Just a thought.
Noel.

I haven't done any splitting of the db, therfore I'm not sure that i have the same problem. The form works fine in the .mdb, by the way. Is there a step that I'm missing?

Another Question... Do the forms have to be based on tables in order for the the tables to be updated?

Hi there,

Just knocked up a simple example of what you are attempting to do (2 tables only tho) and I cant seem to replicate your problem. I've created tables based on tables and on queries and both update fine. the only other thought i had was to makes sure that when you used the external data you didnt accidently import the data rather than link to it. Open your mde file with the shift key down and see what tables are referenced. I'd be happy to look over your db if you think it might help to send me a copy.

Regards,
Noel.

I'll send the .mdb. Perhaps I have an issue with permissions or security?

Hello Appollo14,

I just need your e-mail to forward the file, unless there is another way on this forum.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen, but I noticed that when I linked the .mde back to the tables in the .mdb that it was creating new tables (copies) with a "1" after the name. So, I had double the tables and the names of the linked tables did not match the .mdb tables. I deleted all the tables from the .mde and linked tables again to the .mdb. The tables in the .mde are now updating correctly. I see this as strange. What do you think?

Hi WM, having a prob with me email at the mo so heres my address noel@appollo14.co.uk.
I'm alomost 100% sure this is a case of duplicated data sources as this renaming you have experiennced is exactly what happened to me in my earlier tale. Maybe the tables in you mde are hidden.

Regards,
Noel

if your having probs with that address try noel@appollo14.freeserve.co.uk

I have a working database now with .mde files on two different networked computers. The last thing I noticed about the .mde files after linking back to the the .mdb is that the relationships window showed duplicate tables with the "1" after the name with the 1:N relationships but without the referential integrity characters (1 and "infinity" symbol) showing. I deleted the 'extra' tables in the relationships window and so far so good. We've entered a couple of dozen records without a problem.

Thanks for your consideration and help.
