hi experts,

I'm looking to get my little MCP certificate soon.

Would like it to be in SQL Server DBA.

I'm not clear on how many exams, and which exams I can select from.

Any tips?
Thanks, John

You can read about all the tests at the MCP website

I would suggest the test about how to be an MS-SQL DBA.

Remember, the MCP just proves that you memorized enough to pass the exam. Employers would rather see some relevant school/volunteer experience if you don't have any work experience. You're time might be better spent setting up databases/websites on a volunteer basis.

Sorry, I hit send too soon.

There is a SQL DBA specific course.
You might parley that into the full cert. by taking the next 3 tests too.

And I'm not dissuading you from an MCP. I have one. But I can say, as someone that does make hiring decisions, that I would rather see experience.

Thanks HamletDRC.

I have a couple of years on-the-job as a DBA. It's just a personal goal of mine to get a couple of certifications.

Thanks for your opinions.
John

MCP is a one exam certification.

MCDBA is a four-exam (I believe) certification.

MCDBA is quite hard, after doing the two SQL (DBA and design/implementation), you also need to do a further two exams with one of them being on Windows 2003 (unless you have NT/2000 exams).
As the previous post says, the Microsoft site is the best place for information, but my only advice is that the MCP and other microsoft accreditations have been adversely effected by Cheat sites.
These sites effectively provide the answers to the actual exam questions and negate the need for real-life experience. I spent 3+ years gaining the old MCSD accreditation only for it to be worthless due to things like this.
So if you want to go ahead and spend the money on the exams and books, then it is probably worthwhile from your own learning point of view, but dont expect employers to look too favourably - though some probably still do.

You will find good info on MCP exams in the Microsoft Cert forum forum468

Just a side note.

The MCDBA cert, BTW, contains one of the smallest groups of people to ever have gotten certified by Microsoft. Because fewer people carry the MCDBA, it seems to carry a little more weight in the workplace then the MCSE or MCSA, despite the whole "Paper Cert" syndrome.

On the other hand, the SQL half of the tests are incredibly hard compared to the Windows tests. I'd recommend studying for both of them at the simultaneously rather than one at a time. There's a lot of cross over in both RL jobness and in the study materials. Check out the Sybex line of cert books for some really good fundamentals.

Remember, "Work" is a four letter word. And you know what your mother told you about using four letter words!
