I just finished installing Windows MCE 2005 (build on XP Pro Platform) on a brand new system. Anytime I try to install most anything I get hung by an error:

Setup failed to launch installation engine:
The RPC server is unavailable.

I went through and reformatted the HD and reinstalled the whole OS, but I am encountering the same problem.

I encountered this before and after installing the SP2 from CD. I haven't been able to connect to the internet yet, so the copy is not activated.

Any suggestions!?!?

To get further information about any error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Make sure the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service is Started and set to Automatic in Services.

How did you overcome the SP2 problem?

Does your install of MCE 2005 come on multiple CD's and involve swapping them as you run through the Setup?

I figured out the problem. During the install, it asked for MCE disk 1, and then MCS disk 2, and then a Windows SP2 disk. I put in the SP2 disk I ordered from Microsoft months ago, and it didn't like it. So I cancelled that part of the install and moved on, figuring I would install SP2 after the initial install.

Turns out it really wanted MCS Disk 1, which is where the i386 folder was containing SP2 for the install. My third try with the install did the trick!!
