When I have McAfee anti-virus Pro and Firewall Pro running, my CPU usage is constantly at 70-80%. When I disable them both, it returns to 0% when the computer is idle.

Is this high CPU utilisation normal?

Does sound a bit high. Are you running a Scan at this time or is it just monitoring? Do you have a McAfee window that you can see what files it is checking?

Probably an uninstall/reinstall of McAfee may offer you the ability to repair itself before you actually uninstall and/or reinstall McAfee.

I have the same issues with one machine (which has been upgraded from Win98 to XP Pro), but not with another (clean install of XP Pro). Both machines are around same spec. Is yours a clean install of the OS?

I have wrtiiten onm this many times and have for 15 months awaited a reply from McAfee.
I believe it is a problem with their package.
It sets SVCEHOST.EXE running and gradually uses all available memory.
I switched to Norton Internet Security and had no problems.

BernardStewart,

Just wondering whether that was Virus Scan version 6 or version 7, or some other McAfee product?
