Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone out there has had experience with Mcafee Net Shield.

We run NT4 and win9x and we recently installed this as our network anti virus suite, as it is easy to remotely manage.

Since we have installed it though, we seem to have had a lot of problems with users systems. I am not sure if it is related to the virus software, but it just seems too much of a coincidence.

Has anyone had any problems with this software before, or had any similar experiences?

TIA for any tips.

We're currently using the Active Virus Defense Suite and we have not experienced any issues with NetShield 4.5 SP1 on our servers and VirusScan 4.5.1 SP1 on our desktops...not yet...

For virus alerting to work on 4.0.3 clients on Win9x machines, we had to install NetShield 4.0.3 on one of our servers to forward the alerts to the main NetShield 4.5 server. Other than that, everything so far has been fine for ius.

You never identified the "problems", just said your users are having problems. We'd like to help but we need more details.

And also, make sure you have the latest DATs (4197) and engine (4160) installed.

Hi AVChap,

Sorry about the vagueness of my question. The problem seems to be many different things.

Mainly though, it has caused a huge slow down on my users PC's. (And of course I hear about it all day [smile])

It seems thought the startup of the pc is really slow now, and a lot of users systems freeze after boot up.

I had originally configured the AutoUpdate to run at startup, but have since changed that to every week as it was causing freezeups on some of the PC's. I am not sure if this is going to solve the problem or not.

If you have any tips or idea's it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

On the 9x machines, REM out the SCAN.EXE line. This is redundant and has not additional benefit for the machine. This should solve the "slowness" on startup.

Hope this helps.

AVChap,

When you say "REM out the SCAN.EXE line, where are you talking about??

Is this done on the individual machine? And if so, where?

Thanks,

Ooops ... it's in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. This would entail changing this on each machine. Or, you can "modify" the installation settings using the McAfee Installation Designer (MID). You can download this from McAfee's web site using your grant number. MID allows you to "pre-select" the options.

Hope this helps.

For the slowdowns and system freezes while the users are actually in the OS, I recommend only enabling the Inbound files option on NT4 machines and on Win9x machines, I believe it is possible to set it to Inbound as well. The Outbound causes a lot of disk scanning when running applications to occur so we disabled it in our company.

We were concerned about viruses being written on the disk and so disabling the scan on execution was acceptable as the virus had to be written to disk first before being executed.

On W2K machines, we didn't have any issues with enabling all the options as it didn't cause too much of a slowdown.
