I have a Pentiium 2 running Win 98 1st edition. I was having trouble so I re-installed. System was running well. So I proceeded to loaded my McAfee anti-virus 6.0 CD and was going to download updates. The system kept locking on bootup. I wiped out teh drive and re-installed again. Everything was working well until I loaded McAfee. So I wiped out the drive again, installed Win 98 2nd edition and teh computer booted fine. No problems. Then I installed a new McAfee anti-virus and Firewall 7.0. Immediately it began locking on bootup. As soon as I uninstalled McAfee it booted completely again, no problems. I installed 7.0 and it locked up on bootup. I uninstalled 7.0 and it booted fine. Any ideas why?

No ideas on your problem - this is a link for the mcafee support site - you could try looking around there and see if you get any ideas

There is also a mcafee forum on this site. Im not sure if it has any threads regarding the indivual version or deals more with the corporate versions.

The problem may be caused by McAfee loading during startup.
To prevent this, after installing McAfee, go to Start/Run, type msconfig, click OK, click Startup, uncheck all items that have either McAfee or Network Associates in them, click OK, and restart the computer when prompted.

If this works, then you can either manually load McAfee to run after the system starts, or just run it once a week or so to manually check for viruses.
