Max's infamous dissappearing trick...

I'm running an AMD Athlon 1.4 Ghz with around 400 Megs of Ram with an Asus Geforce 3 brand new install of Win2k Pro, just built the system... when using max th max sessio will just dissappear.. I tried heidi, GL, and D3d and all did the same..with the exception of D3d which did not allow me to see vertex points and still let it crash, except I got the option to save changes... I'm guessing that it crashes when I get processor intensive..but why? i tried a reinstall of the vid drivers... no good.. If anyone can help me out..let me know because I'm crippled....
