Maximum Number of Workstations??

Good day! I'm looking for some plenary information...

My server (Server 2000) is a dual-1.0Ghz system with 512 Mb RAM, and a RAID system hard drive structure (~80Gb). In setting up profiles for all users on our ~50 computer network (blend of Win98 and NT4 workstations), I notice that at times, loading up profiles is time-consuming.

I was wondering... How many computers is idea for such a server as I have? When should I consider upgrading to a faster server, and at that time, what considerations should I give for hardware?

Hi,

1) I note from another post by yourself that your users include their Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files in their profiles. It is possible that your profile environments are using the profile space to store these temporary files (which are maintained for seven days by default in IE5) and can reach 90Mb plus for some heavy web surfers.

There are known registry keys that can be modified to point the Temporary Internet Files to a local C:\ folder, but this would prevent you completing your requested tasks (in your other thread on reading Temporary Internet Files in a users profile).

2) It is equally possible that the TEMP folder for each user is also registered in their profile space, and this could also be part of the issue you are observing.

3) Some users may have large files on their desktop space which can sometime be the default location for storing downloaded files.

4) For some products that will not cost money you could type the following into a search engine 'size of this folder' or 'powerful and flexible harddisk space manager' ... as the forums do not allow advertising, or promotion, ofproducts I can't name anything here specfically.
