Can anyone help. I seem to remember reading a looong time ago about the maximum UNC filename that Windows can handle across a network environment.
It was regarding the length of the full UNC filename, not just the 'filename.txt' type.
Every now and then, Windows will report an error opening a file that it says it can't find but is blatantly there, and I know that in the past (under NT4), the combined filename length was the problem.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Although Windows NT lets you create long share names just as you can create long file names, be careful when doing so: clients running other operating systems may not be able to access them. For example, MS-DOS workstations cannot access share names longer than 8.3 characters. The total length of the complete UNC name, including the server name (e.g., \\Server\Myshare), should be fewer than 32 characters.
