Master browser 1

I have three computers set up on a home network through a vigor router. One computer is running Win XP pro (pc1), the other two XP home. On one of the XP home computers (pc2) I keep getting errors in the event log that state;

"The master browser has recieved a server announcement from the computer pc1 that believes that it is the master browser on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{0CD6C947-6CF2-4014-. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced"

I have also noticed that Explored is falling over on network folders from pc2. I.e. if I try to browse folders shared on pc1 from pc2 Explorer crashes, also if I browse shared docs on pc2 from pc2 it also falls over.

Any ideas?

Edit the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

Set the key MaintainServerList to No

Set it to Yes on one machine and No on all others.

Also set IsDomainMaster to FALSE

All done as you said.

Problem still persists. I've been digging further and found that Dr Watson is showing an error for Explorer "Explorer.EXE c0000005 SHELL32!SHLoadNonloadediconOverlayidentifiers(7749745F)", and also there is an error showing up in the Event Viewer "The Computer Browser service terminated with service-specific error 2550 (0x9F6)"

The registry edit did solve another error that was cropping up though. Cheers. Any thoughts on the other two.

Three comments:

1. There is nothing wrong with a Browser election issue in the Event Log. You turn a new machine, and, an election occurs or is suggested. This is "normal."

2. You do not do both registry changes suggested above. The first either turns off/on the Computer Browser Service. The second determines whether, in any election, you try to win the election. These are quite different issues. If you insist on doing both, (not advised, other than in the presence of a 24/7 machine as declared Master Browser) you will continue to have problems. This explains you last point of issue with the Computer Browser Issue in your error messages.

3. Your last issue: is NOT a computer browser issue, but a local machine issue. Download and do a repair with the Microsoft Powertoy "TweakUI" and immediately ask it to do a Repair Operation of your Icons.

If still no Joy on the last issue, do a repair reinstall of XP on the problem machine:

You will have to reinstall any Hotfixes or Service Packs if you are forced to choose this route.

Done all as advised (and then set the registry back as it was). And still the problem persists......

After yet more searching (back to basics... ie. Microsoft.com) I found this.

Apparently microsoft are aware of this issue with XP and have a hotfix prepared to deal with the problem. But it is not available for download. So I'll have to pay for the damn thing as I have OEM copies of XP on home built systems (for OEM contact your computer manufacturer..... oh it's me!)

Looks like I'll have to wait for the next Service Pack.

Your situation does not match this KB article.
Just ignore registry changes, enable the Computer Browser service, and if still problematic, see:

This is often a network adapter issue and MS does not write network adapter drivers.

I think I'm just going to cop out and do a reinstall on the faulty machine. All this time and effort would be better spent on a new install doing some work!
