Massive memory leak when running chkdsk.exe 3

It seems to effect only partitions or drives that don't have the Windows 7 operating system loaded on them but are checked by Windows 7's ChkDsk. I can't say that I have encountered this myself, not yet anyway.

Thank you for the information, it is one to watch out for.

Wow!. I haven't run chkdsk since I installed Win7, so I haven't encountered the error.

However it is a major flaw. But hardly one that would kill their projected release date as the article warns.

They are still in time to figure out what is really going on.

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm running the RTM code and don't see a problem running chkdsk.

Both blogs seem somewhat biased, and lack decent testing; still, hardly going to derail the launch.

I figured I would have been as devastaing as they were making it out to be.
Zdnet (from Smah's link) has a more realistic approach. I agree with them. It seems that if you are checking a drive for errors you'd want to devote most available resources to it to get it done quickly.

They mention that it only eats up about 90% of memory, and that everything remains responsive which means the Application is working fine, as opposed to having a memory leak which usually means the machine becomes totally unresponsive.

It also mentions no real increase in CPU power, which again means the application is working fine, not hogging every ounce of CPU power to finish a task its stuck on for whatever reason.

All in all, I think this is a design feature blown out of proportion rather than an actual devastating bug.

This is supposed to read: [red]wouldn't[/red] not would.

I think this whole bs issues revolves around people who
1) hate MS and anything it does.
2) Want to see Windows7 fail or at least be as bad as they think Vista is.
3) Don't have a clue.

chkdsk /r is meant to fix minor problems with the file system/drive like fixing cross-linked files, directory errors, lost clusters, etc.

And as mentioned, in order to run chkdsk, chkdsk HAS to be able to obtain an exclusive lock on the drive or partition. Otherwise you need to schedule chkdsk to run at the next bootup.

The /r flag also cleans out blocks of blank hard drive space that the OS has marked as being occupied.

Agree. Here is an app that is SUPPOSED to run the disk at 100% and will take the CPU to about 90%. Will that impair performance? You bet.

Is this a Windows 7 killer? If that is the best that the anti MS brigade can come up with, I suggest they go install a new Unix clone and have fun.

I think in this case it was someone who was pro XP, rather than pro *nix.

I ran tests when those articles came out a few weeks ago. I was unable to reproduce the issue on either my RC or RTM machines.

I hope you find this post helpful.
