Mass page changes

Hi, Im trying to redesign a site and need to change hundreds of files in one particular folder that use the general template. Short of renaming the new template as the old one and updating the entire site (something I dont want to do), is there a way of doing this? (I tried it with find and replace, and it doesnt seem to work)

Is there a reason why you can't just make the changes to the existing template and keep the same name? Or are you incorporating major changes such as table layout dimensions, etc.? I can see that being a hassle.
