This may seem a strange question but when you map a network drive from a client machine to a server is there a time limit before the server disconnects it. The server and client machine are on all the time but it disconnets a couple of times a day is there a time limit before the server disconnects or is it a switch/hub problem or a cable issue?

Cheers

On our system (win2000 server....50 clients) our clients
logoff daily. But, I have 10 pc's running win95 that are
Time Clock stations. They were losing connectivity daily
at 2:30AM. It turned out to be Norton AntiVirus Corp.
It was running a daily scan during that time. When they
would modify a file, Norton was locking them out for a
short time. Twenty minutes later it would let them back
in. What desktop version are your clients using?

Have gained much by just reading questions and answers on this site but would be grateful if anyone could recommend a book that will enlighten me more about win 2000server. If possible aimed at the complete idiot rather than the competent amateur.
I am likely to take on the role of network manager at my school and will have 18 pcs running win 98( eventually rising to about 30). The installers are keen to use NT 4 on the server but I assume that win 2000 server is a more up to date and current version of server software. Am I correct or is NT 4 a better bet with so few machines running on the whole network?
Sorry to appear a complete dolt but will be on a very steep learning curve shortly and this site has already proved to be useful in answering other questions I have.

Are the clients just running an application? Or are you looking at email, internet, anti-virus, etc? NT would work fine for you with allot less headache. Six months ago I was a rookie with 2000 server replacing a nt environ. I spent the first three weeks researching error log messages. One of the best things will be to have a internet conn. already hooked up nearby. Most of my problems were resolved by finding the right website. Properly stating the problem is the first step to getting an answer on the internet though. Is there a network setup currently? Getting NT or 2000 installed on a test server is best. I started learning at home by putting nt on a pc and then getting a win 98 system to log on. I went with Harry M. Brelsford's Secrets Windows 2000 Server. He speaks english and starts off with ideas through installation and then on to daily system monitoring. I found it at OfficeMax.
