Map network Drive to Remote Windows Server

Hello.

I have a on my local machine that updates a local M$ access database. I have rented a windows server and want to run the program localy still, but up date the access database on the remote windows server via maped drive.

What i had asked my server was if i could connect via remote desktop, but it was not allowed for security.

So what they have done for me is to give me the folder i want to use as a shared folder with executable permissions on the remote windows server.

From here i thought it should be fairly easy to map a network drive to it, but have failed now fore weeks.

I can goto map network drive and hit the drop down and select the folder via ftp but the next button is greyed out, so i can go no further.
I tried a lot of connection paths/strings all to no avail.

This is the path i have been fiddling with.
\\ipaddress\share /user:domain\username password

I have been putting this in the area of the map network drive in xp before the drop down where you can choose where to map it to.
Each time i get the same thing, cant find host.

I dont know if it is something i am doing wrong or if the servber needs to make something else for me to connect to this shared folder.

Any help would be great.

Has the folder actually been shared on the server? and if so, what access rights have been set up on share & NTFS?

What do you mean by remote, what hardware is between you and the server on your network?

Hello.

I have asked 2 times about the shared folder, and they said it is shared. I havent asked yet what access rights are on the share or NTFS. I will send an email to them right after this post to find out.

I can ping the server i think, well i can ping the ip of my domain there, is that what you mean there?


Hardware between me and the server im am not 100% sure what the have before them, but i am on isdn with no router or anthing, just through my modem.

say the server is called server1.

if you type ping server1, what is the result?
if you type ping the.servers.ip.address, what is the result?

the cant find host indicates a name resolution problem, and the results of your ping will help determine exactly what...

I have pinged the server and it it all fine, i am using neo trace to do this.
I pinged the primary server and the secondary server.

what do you mean by primary and secondary?
do you mean you are pinging your dns servers?

what you need to do is ping the server that has the share you are trying to access. is it one of your dns servers?

Just got an email from, i asked them the question you asked me,"Has the folder actually been shared on the server? and if so, what access rights have been set up on share & NTFS?"

This was the responce, so i guess after weeks of asking them, and having them set up shared files ect it was all to no avail.

After mailing you yesterday, I spoke to network admin and they actually told me that it can''t be done because of secuirty issue. The only way to get the site in your machine is using fromtpage or visual studio.

Actually, a lot of hosting companies are doing this. My dad has his site through 1and1 and I can't get to the databases except through ssh, and the site (using phpmyadmin). That's the only way they allow it. It is a good thing, because it keeps hackers out.

Thankyou gents/ladies who have helped me out here, we have ported over to mysql now so all should work out fine for me soon.
