How can I map a drive to a W2003 server from w98/ME PCs? I tried this Net Use command:

"net use K: \\10.3.1.1\data"

and got these results:

"The password is invalid for \\10.3.1.1\data. For more information, contact your network administrator.
Type the password for \\10.3.1.1\data:******"

The "*"'s are the user's password (I also tried the administrator's password) with the following results:

"Error 5: You do not currently have access to this file. The file may be mark read-only, or it may be part of a shared resource such as a folder (Data is a shared folder(?)),a named pipe, a queue, or a semaphore. You can use the ATTRIB command to change the read-only attribute, or try again later when the file may be available.
Type the password for \\10.3.1.1\data:"

What password is it looking for? I must be missing something simple here, but I just don't see it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Rich

Sean,

Thanks for your reply. I already have a matching user and password on the server and W98 machine. In the linked forum article it states to "Grant this user permission to use the shared folder." What type of permission should I be granting? Is it any different than my XP users?

Thanks again.

I don't mean to be insulting but I'm not sure your command is correct.

A bit more detail:

NET USE [drive: | *] [\\computer\directory [password | ?]]
[/SAVEPW:NO] [/YES] [/NO]

drive Specifies the drive letter you assign to a shared directory.
computer Specifies the name of the computer sharing the resource.
directory Specifies the name of the shared directory.
password Specifies the password for the shared resource, if any.
? Specifies that you want to be prompted for the password of the shared resource. You don't need to use this option unless the password is optional.
/SAVEPW:NO Specifies that the password you type should not be saved in your password-list file. You need to retype the password the next time you connect to this resource.

Hey Army Guy (Retired Coastie guy here),

No insult taken, but what are you recommending I try instead? I tried every combination I could think of with no luck.

Thanks!
