The "DNS and BIND" book state that to take maximum advantage of IXFR, you should modify your zone only with DDNS updates and never by hand. This is due to the fact that the server can not tell exactly what was updated during a manual update.
So I am curious about how IXFR behaves in the following configuration. A Windows DNS master server with a BIND slave server and the zone having some records that are updated manually and some records updated via DDNS.
I’m assuming a DDNS update is a non-issue. The Windows server is updated and then sends a NOTIFY to the BIND server. The BIND server performs a IXFR and gets the new updated record. I think this is all strait forward.
The uncertainty is with a manual update to the zone. When the zone is updated manually the Windows server would send a NOTIFY to the BIND server. The BIND server would then attempt the IXFR. What happens then? The BIND server would know the serial has been increased, but the IXFR would return empty (or would it return at all?). Would the BIND server simply give up and then get the update when the refresh expired? or would it do a AXFR right then?
I’m also thinking that the “DNS and BIND” book might only be talking about BIND when it says that the server can not tell what has been updated in a manual update. Since Windows DNS is quite different and each record is an individual AD object, it might be able to tell what has changed in manual update just fine.
Anyone have any experience with this specific configuration and be able to shed some light on how this would work out.
