making a direct connection

Can I make a direct connection between a laptop (win 2000) and a comptuer (98) using their modem instead of the serial or parallel ports?

No. Requires some sort of telephone capabilities to get the modems to talk.

Parallel would be faster than the modem connection anyway. Is there a reason for asking? Perhaps there is another solution...
