I have a computer with a CDWRITER 2410. My kids can use it to 'copy' cd roms or create a cd-rom. I want to use it as an additional disk drive. Ideally, I would like to keep my mail on one disk, downloaded items on another, etc. I am unable to do so however because when I try, I get the message 'Disk D: is unavailable'. None of my software - Alcohol 120%, etc. - will function in the manner I want to use it. I am hoping that someone will have fought this battle and won. Thank you.

You need something like roxio's "direct cd". it mounts the cd like a drive in explorer and then you can write files to it in explorer just like the hard drive (though slower, and only write files and not erase, unless you use rewritable cd's)

I've also had good experience with Ahead's InCD (part of the Nero package), but a warning - you'll want to adjust the options of InCD prior to formatting your CDs and disable the Mount Rainer support. With it enabled, I've always had instability.

Just so I know that I understand you. The MS software that recognizes the hardware does not enable it to work? So I bought hardware that has to have extra software to make it work. <shakes head in dismay> Next thing you know we will have to buy software for the monitor, etc. <kick's BG in a sensitive area>

CD Writers have two functions, reading and writing. The reading part is identical to all other CD-ROMS, and therefore are recognised by everything you have already, including any old MS-DOS CD-ROM drivers you may have.

The writing part is achieved with new software - Windows XP includes software for writing to CDs, but anything earlier OS doesn't - which is why you need Nero or EasyCD or something.
