Hie guys. I am trying to configure a linux samba server for the first
time. I have a folder named costbible that i want only users in the group @accounts. I wrote the following lines in the smb.conf file

[costbible]
comment = Cost bible
path = /usr/costbible
valid users = @accounts
read only = no
create mask = 0765

this is working ok but what i would like is a situation in which users who do not belong to @accounts group will not be able to view the folder costbible. right now they can view it but cannot access it's contents.

thanks in advance

The way to make shares invisible to windows client, is to add $ to the end of the share name. In your case, costbible$. The drawback to this is that it would be invisible to every windows client.

When I say 'invisible' that only means that it won't be seen in Network Neighborhood. If you know the name/path, it can still be accessed as normal. So, if as long as members of the accounts group can access it without seeing it, this should work.

It works well.Thank you. But is there not a way of making the shared folder available(visible) for valid users and invisible for invalid users on the network neighbourhood

Not that I know of. Depending on the setup, you can map a drive letter or create a desktop shortcut for the people that need to see it.

You can map a volume as a share using the %U variable.

Been a while since I did this - this allows you to have dynamic shares allocated just for each user - i.e. John gets a share called John, Dave gets a share called Dave but John can't even see the share called Dave.. if you see what I mean....
Each share is visible only for the session in question - far nicer than Windows - users can't even see shares for other users...
