Hello All,
I am a sys admin novice and I am installing Apache 2.0 on a Sun Solaris Box. I followed all directions to get the Apache 2.0 installation to happen and then I realized I do not have access to update the default directory (/usr/local/apache2). So I just started the process over again and gave 'configure' a different prefix directory - one I do have access to. It appeared to create the directories properly, but when I do 'make install' it still tries to use /usr/local/apache2 instead of the directory I gave to 'configure'. I am running on a hosted machine and I do not have access to the root and can not get it. I can install my own version and do a port redirect (which I will also have to figure out) to see the new version of Apache.

Should I start over again (if so, how do I unistall) or is there a simple configuration file I can update. Thanks for your help.

mhamilton3,

Even without root access you should be able to copy (recursively) all of the files in /usr/local/apache2 to another directory that you do have access to.

If Apache is already running on this host, you won't be able to start another Apache process however.

Thanks Wishdiak,
The folks at Verio convinced me that I could do this. After getting your message, I called them on it and they said - oops, you can't do it. Thanks for you info.

mhamilton3,

What exactly can't you do? If you already have Apache running on this box, you could always network another box to run another instance of Apache on.

Wishdiak,
I don't currently own any boxes, I am hosting them through Via Verio. They have shared FreeBSD boxes that allow me to have my own virtual environment with Root Access. On these boxes I can upgrade the version of Apache or anything else I want. On the Solaris boxes (still hosted with Via Verio) they environment is semi-virtual. Apache version is shared by everyone on the box. So what I was looking to do was basically run two different versions of Apache on the same box, but have Apache one just redirect traffic to Apache 2.x. I am pretty sure I am out of luck.
